Questions & answers

At our Gynecology and Obstetrics Private Practice by the Opera in Munich we have been treating women with unfulfilled childbearing wishes for many years.

We hope we have been able to answer some of the most common questions for you here, and we look forward to welcoming you to a consultation at our practice.

Why am I not getting pregnant?

There can be many reasons for not becoming pregnant. Is your cycle regular? / Do you have a regular cycle? When is your ovulation and does it take place on a regular basis?

If you want to become pregnant, you should have sexual intercourse at the “right” time. This ideally means twelve hours to a maximum of five days before ovulation. Especially if you don’t want to count days, you should simply try to have sexual intercourse regularly during the week before ovulation. If you have tried for a while and don’t get pregnant, it may be that there is a problem. Even a small irregularity can lead to fertility difficulties. Hormones play a major role here. Therefore, we examine your hormone levels and check your ovulation sonographically per ultrasound.

When should I visit a gynecologist about childbearing?

You should arrange an appointment with us as soon as you begin considering childbearing.
Basic prerequisites for a successful pregnancy are in place at the outset. If this is the case, then the first step is to have sexual intercourse regularly. If pregnancy doesn‘t take place after about a year, you should return for another examination and consultation at our practice in Munich center.

Then we can investigate the reason for the absence of a pregnancy and discuss further possibilities with you. We are happy to advise you about a possible insemination (semen is introduced into the uterus via a tube) and if necessary we will recommend further appropriate steps. It could be useful, for example, to recommend consulting a fertility center. Of course, it’s not possible to specify how long you should attempt to get pregnant. There are, however, average indicators on which you can orient yourself. (see image, Source: Management of the Infertile woman by Helen A. Carcio and the Fertility Sourcebook by M. Sara Rosenthal)

Please remember: all these values are simply averages. Each pair is very individual, and the aging process proceeds differently.

What do I need to consider when planning a child?

Vaccinations

It is essential to check your vaccination status before attempting to become pregnant. You should have current vaccinations against the common childhood diseases such as rubella or measles. Simply make an appointment at our practice and let us know your childbearing wishes. We will be happy to inform you about the most important points you should be aware of.

Folic acid

You should take folic acid before trying to get pregnant. The effect only develops over time when a sufficient dose is taken. Folic acid plays an important role in all cell formation and division processes in the human body. A deficiency during pregnancy can lead, among others, to so-called neural tube defects in the child. Let us advise you on dosage and ingestion.

Thyroid Gland

Does your thyroid show normal levels? If you suffer from a thyroid over- or underfunction, you should be medicinally well-regulated to be able to become pregnant. We are happy to check your thyroid values at our practice and advise you on an efficient regulation of your medications.

Stop with nicotine and alcohol!

Even though this seems logical, nicotine and alcohol are absolute taboos, both when trying to get pregnant, as well as during pregnancy. Smoking or the intake of alcohol poisons the body and hinders the way to the desired childbearing. We are happy to advise you about different ways to quit smoking.

Balanced diet and exercise

A healthy, balanced diet and sufficient exercise are not only the cornerstones of a healthy life but also (of) a successful pregnancy. Take a little time to consider integrating them into your lifestyle, if they have not yet been part of it.

Patience and joy of life

Despite modern medicine, childbearing can only be partially planned. Too many factors play a role. Your general well-being is one of the most important factors. Therefore, we recommend to all our patients to simply take on the adventure of childbearing. With a lot of patience and above all joy of life, you can fulfill your wish. By all your considerations, do not forget that love is the most important ingredient for a successful pregnancy.
